Spinning and Beach Snacks

The sun is rising later and later, which makes it harder and harder to wake up at 5am.

IMG_1070

Hello moon

I met a friend/client for an early morning Spin class at her gym, and we were both drenched in sweat, but feeling strong by the end.

IMG_1071

I’ve always said that music is the key to a good workout, and this particular instructor was right on with her music choices.

There is nothing worse than trying to push through a spin class while being forced to listen to old school aerobics songs such as “Hit me with you best shot” and “Come on ride the train”

Pinned Image

I’ve even experienced an entire spin session full of Johnny Cash, The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles cover bands.

Talk about wanting to ride my bike right through the second story window.

This morning however.. great class, great music, great sweat.

IMG_1073

(P.S I’m obsessed with my Polar HRM)

We followed up with a quick upper body circuit that looked like this.

IMG_1072

  • Push Ups-15
  • Shoulder Press-12
  • Upright Row-12

Rest 30 seconds, and repeat for a total of 3 sets.

  • Bicep Curls-15
  • Overhead Triceps Extension–15

Rest for 30 seconds and repeat for a total of 3 sets

Stretch.

I knew exactly what I wanted as my post workout meal, so I immediately whipped up my yogurt bowl as soon as I walked in the door.

IMG_1074

Greek yogurt, blueberries, 1/2 sliced frozen banana, 1/2 cup Kashi GOLEAN, 1/2 Tbsp raw almond butter, and cinnamon.

craving demolished.

My family and I are heading to York Beach Maine for the weekend, so I need to get my procrastinating self packed.

Along with a few outfits and toiletries, I make it a point to pack some snacks for the beach, and to munch on before dinner.

Vacation Snacks 101

  • 100 calorie almond packs/Nut butter packets (such as Justin’s)
  • Easy fruits-apples,oranges,plums,peaches,grapes,strawberries
  • Greek Yogurt
  • Hard Boiled Eggs
  • String Cheese
  • Ziploc bags of raw veggies
  • Tuna packets/Boards Head Low Salt Turkey deli meat
  • Rice Cakes
  • Protein Powder/Bars
  • Popchips
  • Pickles
  • WATER..and wine Smile

It’s always better to have your own options, other than what’s available on the boardwalk or brought by others.

Turn down the Lays, soda, and pizza, and opt for a bag of popchips with your sandwich along side a crunchy pickle. Munch on sliced turkey rolled with cheese and a handful of almonds, rice cakes with a packet of nut butter, or a hard boiled egg with a piece of fruit.

Simple on the go snacks that provide energy, nutrients, and salty craving control. Along with bottled water, you’ll be set for the day!

Enjoy your first weekend of August!

WIAW {emptying out the fridge}

Summer has arrived!!!

Let the heat wave begin!!

How ironic is it that the first days of summer are scorchers?

Love it!

Peas and Crayons

So I started my morning off with a mish mash of cottage cheese, Kashi GoLean, 1/2 a frozen banana and fresh blueberries with cinnamon.

IMG_0797

I’ve noticed that cottage cheese seems to hold me over longer than Greek yogurt. My stomach usually begins to grumble 2 hours after a meal, but this mixture often keeps me full for 3 hours or more on some days.

Do you prefer cottage cheese or Greek yogurt?

After running a few errands, I felt my hunger start to kick in. I knew that I needed a snack to get me through my Insanity workout, so I decided to make myself a pizza…

A PreWorkout Pizza!

IMG_0826

Rice cake with sugar free strawberry jam, 6 Tbsp. egg whites  topped with cinnamon, and 1/2 Tbsp Raw almond butter.

Cut into four slices, and eaten with a side of baby carrots. Not too filling, with just the right amount of energy that I needed to push through.

I allowed myself 45 minutes to digest, then it was time to get serious.

IMG_0811

I love how Shaun T.  motivates you through the entire workout. Just when you think you can’t take anymore, he talks you into completing that one last rep. That’s how you become stronger, and there is nothing like being completely drenched in sweat after your workout.

It’s cleansing, in a smelly way. Plus, the view isn’t bad either Smile.

Post workout Sweet Potato Boat

IMG_0802

1 scoop Sunwarrior vanilla mixed with cinnamon and water, poured onto a 1/2 a cooled sweet potato cut vertically.

I also had a small un-pictured spinach salad with about 2 ounces of leftover baked chicken, yellow peppers, and kumato tomatoes.

 Pinned Image

These tomatoes are my favorite! They are deliciously juicy, and taste fresh from the garden. I’ve found them at both Market Basket and Stop n Shop.

Since Matt and I are going away for the weekend, I’m trying to use up what I have in the fridge. I prepared a giant bowl of pasta salad for Matt to eat throughout the week, along with another salad for myself.

IMG_0829

In the mix: pasta, mayo (I know, but Matt likes it) celery, yellow pepper, cucumber, hardboiled eggs (2 whole eggs, 3 egg whites), black pepper, salt and a pinch of parsley.

My salad: mixed greens with carrots, mushrooms, brussel spouts and asparagus, served with a sweet potato egg white omelet, using the other half of my potato from earlier, and some cinnamon.

IMG_0810

Along with some lemon water out of my favorite mug, from my favorite place

IMG_0824

Can’t wait to go back this Summer! Check out my post about last year’s York Beach vacation HERE

016

For those of you spending the next few days outside, remember to stay hydrated and protected from the sun.

Fill a water bottle with lemon or cucumber slices to add a hint of flavor, and set a timer on your phone as a reminder to reapply sunscreen every 30-45 minutes. Also, if you plan on exercising outside, it’s best to do it early morning or in the evening when the sun is less strong.

Be smart, be safe, and enjoy the day!

Home Away From Home

Returning to work after a vacation is the ultimate struggle.

I have a tendency to dwell for the first few days, reflecting back on what I would have been during the week prior.

For Instance…(Cue Violins)

“Last Monday at this time I was getting ready to go out to dinner with my family and best friend at the Union Bluff Hotel”

or

“Last week at this time I was at the beach taking a nap”

(Would you like some cheese with that wine?)

Fortunately, my wallowing usually ends after a couple of days and I adjust back into my day-to-day routine.

Before leaving for Maine on Saturday, I promised myself that I would take the time to reflect, relax, and enjoy each day as it comes. A simple vacation was what I had intended on taking, and that is exactly the kind of vacation I had.

My family has been spending their summers at York Beach, Maine for decades. This quaint seashore town holds a special place in my heart, and a warm feeling immediately overcomes me whenever I see the Ferris Wheel approaching as I pull into town.

Every year growing up, I would spend 1-3 weeks in July crammed into a cottage with cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents. Food was always being prepared, clothes were hung out on the line to dry in the warm air, and loud voices filled each of the tiny oak rooms.

I would walk downstairs to the sight of my grandmother making breakfast, card games being played at the kitchen table, and everyone gathered around the living room TV. We made our own fun, and had plenty of laughs along the way.

I wouldn’t trade the memories of my summers here for anything in the world, and seeing my niece experience all of the activities that my cousins and I enjoyed as children was such a blessing.

018

042

We arrived at our cottage Saturday afternoon, and immediately made it our own .

008

009

010

Every morning I awoke to the scent of coffee brewing in the kitchen, and Mickey Mouse Club House playing on the TV in the living room.

I sipped my coffee for an hour or so before heading out for a 4 mile walk down to a local beach. It felt good to get outside before the heat got too intense, and to clear my head in quiet morning air.

Our days were spent back on Short Sands, where we lounged in the water, snacked out of our cooler and strolled up and down the boardwalk.

019

025

064

We set up shop in the same spot everyday.

The Family Smile

026

023

067

My cousin was the only one who found a Sand dollar that week, and my niece was in awe when we presented it to her.

068

It was a proud moment.

I read “Something Borrowed” by Emily Giffin, which was the only novel that caught my eye in the ONE bookstore in town.

044

I actually enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. Giffin has an easy writing style that kept me engaged from page to page.

The first few nights were spent bbqing chicken and steaks with corn on the cobb, baked beans, and brown rice.

013

012

Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio was also enjoyed with fresh blueberries and splash of Sprite Zero

014

My mother also brought along some fresh tomato sauce because …”You have to eat Pasta on Sunday’s no matter what.” Even while on vacation in the 90 degree heat, meatballs, sausages and ziti were prepared in the hot kitchen and served at the usual 3:00 hour.

Mangia!

Our other dinner destinations included:

The Union Grill @ The Union Bluff Hotel

Blues Burger, where I ordered a Veggie Burger made with Barley, Oats, Lentils and Walnuts. It was not what I expected, but tasted delicious nonetheless.

Blue Sky @ the Atlantic House Hotel.

072

Woody’s Brick Oven Pizza

And of course, the vacation would not be complete without breakfast at the Goldenrod.

074

Salt Water Taffy = the BEST smell in the world

075

I was a bit lazy with snapping pictures of my meals. (Bad Blogger!) However, I enjoyed many delicious dishes including, Salmon, Mahi Mahi, Veggie Burgers and cool summer salads.

As far as dessert goes, it was mandatory following our early dinners. Every night I dug into BOTH Moose Tracks and Purple Cow Frozen Yogurt.

031

A cake was also brought by my father for my mother’s birthday.

063

Happy Birthday Mama!

062

Plenty of walking took place on this vacation, which helped me work off the massive amounts of food I consumed.

We walked to Nubble Light, strolled through Perkins Cove in Ogunquit, and shopped around the stores in town

036

041

073

084

My favorite place in Perkins Cove is Perkins Cove Candies.

This candy store is full of homemade chocolates, along with every type of gummy, sour, and sugar-free candy you can imagine.

You are given a bucket to fill to the brim with the candies of your choice, and it is very easy to go overboard. As a matter of fact, we collected almost $70 worth of deliciousness. Smile

Since the town closes by 10, besides one of the restaurant lounges, the rest of our nights were spent sitting around the dining room table, drinking, talking and playing card games.

003

Taking a break from everyday life was just what we needed

081

Sometimes, all it takes is a few nights of laughs, calming waves and a short time away to recharge your batteries.
