Nutritional Needs to Succeed.

A healthy diet is a major factor when it comes to learning, as well as the way a child behaves in and out of the classroom.

They need lasting energy, not a sugar high.

Proper hydration, not a can of caffeine

And real, whole foods, not fake and processed junk.

Give them the nutrients they need to concentrate, with plenty of energy left over for after school activities.

1. Eat a hearty breakfast.

  • A bowl of whole grain cereal (watch for sugar content and sodium,) with milk of choice, sliced banana and blueberries.
  • Oatmeal or Cream of Wheat with milk, raisins and a pinch of brown sugar
  • Whole grain toast with nut butter and banana slices
  • Whole wheat wrap with scrambled eggs and 1 oz of cheese
  • Whole wheat waffles, french toast, or pancakes with fresh fruit and dollop of yogurt.
  • Greek or Non Fat Yogurt with sliced strawberries, granola, and cinnamon. Make it into a parfait to look more kid friendly.
  • Cottage cheese with melon and a side of wheat toast
  • Scrambled eggs with toast and turkey bacon
  • A smoothie made with any frozen fruits, 1/2 cup yogurt, 1/2-1 cup water or milk, raw oats and ice.

2. An afternoon pick me up

  • Carrot sticks or an apple with nut butter
  • Cucumber and Hummus
  • Frozen grapes with yogurt
  • Ants on a log
  • Pirate Booty or popchips
  • Dried fruit
  • Whole grain crackers and string cheese
  • Graham crackers with banana slices and peanut butter
  • Trail mix: whole grain cereal, dried fruit, dark chocolate chips, pretzels.

Try to stick to water, milk, and fresh fruit juices with no added sugars.

3. A legitimate lunch

  • Boars head low salt turkey, cheese, and mustard sandwich. Side of baby carrots, and a small fruit salad.
  • Whole grain pasta salad with tomatoes, peppers and hardboiled eggs. Side of berries and dark chocolate chips.
  • Nut butter and jelly on a whole wheat wrap. Side of apple slices with yogurt for dipping.
  • Ham and cheese roll ups with a side of cherry tomatoes, bell pepper sticks, and an orange.
  • Almond butter and dried cranberries on whole wheat. Side of carrot and celery sticks.
  • Tuna salad made with 1 Tbsp Greek yogurt, a pinch of black pepper and chopped celery, rolled onto a whole wheat wrap with lettuce and tomato. Side of grapes.

Use Tupperware that has separate compartments for convenience and fun!

So cute.

4. Have an active afternoon

  • Ride bikes
  • Rollerblade
  • Get them involved in sports
  • MOVE!

do NOT allow video and computer games to take over the rest of the their day.

5. A helping hand

Allow your kids to help you make dinner. This will teach them how to create healthy balanced meals, which they will later create on their own.

Think lean proteins, veggies, healthy fats, and complex carbs

6. Early to bed, Early to rise

Make sure your students get at least 7-8 hours of sleep. We all know how hard it is to concentrate when exhaustion strikes!

Set an example, and show your kids how important, and delicious, healthy foods can be.

Remember, they are what they eat, so give them the tools they need to succeed.

Here is a great article from the Chicago Tribune that talks more about this topic.

Spinning and Beach Snacks

The sun is rising later and later, which makes it harder and harder to wake up at 5am.

Hello moon

I met a friend/client for an early morning Spin class at her gym, and we were both drenched in sweat, but feeling strong by the end.

IMG_1071

I’ve always said that music is the key to a good workout, and this particular instructor was right on with her music choices.

There is nothing worse than trying to push through a spin class while being forced to listen to old school aerobics songs such as “Hit me with you best shot” and “Come on ride the train”

Pinned Image

I’ve even experienced an entire spin session full of Johnny Cash, The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles cover bands.

Talk about wanting to ride my bike right through the second story window.

This morning however.. great class, great music, great sweat.

(P.S I’m obsessed with my Polar HRM)

We followed up with a quick upper body circuit that looked like this.

IMG_1072

  • Push Ups-15
  • Shoulder Press-12
  • Upright Row-12

Rest 30 seconds, and repeat for a total of 3 sets.

  • Bicep Curls-15
  • Overhead Triceps Extension–15

Rest for 30 seconds and repeat for a total of 3 sets

Stretch.

I knew exactly what I wanted as my post workout meal, so I immediately whipped up my yogurt bowl as soon as I walked in the door.

Greek yogurt, blueberries, 1/2 sliced frozen banana, 1/2 cup Kashi GOLEAN, 1/2 Tbsp raw almond butter, and cinnamon.

craving demolished.

My family and I are heading to York Beach Maine for the weekend, so I need to get my procrastinating self packed.

Along with a few outfits and toiletries, I make it a point to pack some snacks for the beach, and to munch on before dinner.

Vacation Snacks 101

  • 100 calorie almond packs/Nut butter packets (such as Justin’s)
  • Easy fruits-apples,oranges,plums,peaches,grapes,strawberries
  • Greek Yogurt
  • Hard Boiled Eggs
  • String Cheese
  • Ziploc bags of raw veggies
  • Tuna packets/Boards Head Low Salt Turkey deli meat
  • Rice Cakes
  • Protein Powder/Bars
  • Popchips
  • Pickles
  • WATER..and wine Smile

It’s always better to have your own options, other than what’s available on the boardwalk or brought by others.

Turn down the Lays, soda, and pizza, and opt for a bag of popchips with your sandwich along side a crunchy pickle. Munch on sliced turkey rolled with cheese and a handful of almonds, rice cakes with a packet of nut butter, or a hard boiled egg with a piece of fruit.

Simple on the go snacks that provide energy, nutrients, and salty craving control. Along with bottled water, you’ll be set for the day!

Enjoy your first weekend of August!

 xoxo

I am not a fan of all the Valentine’s Day pressure that restaurants, card stores and flower shops throw in our face every year, making us feel bad for not having an          “I’ll LOVE YOU FOREVER AND EVER X2 INFINITY” party, in honor of our significant other, cat, dog, family member and Iphone.

A Sweet POPCHIP Giveaway

As an employee in the health and fitness field, I am always on the lookout for a tasty snack that will help satisfy my cravings without feeling deprived.

This is where popchips come in handy.

popchips are a type of chip made from real potatoes that have been transformed into a kernel-like substance and then “popped” using basic heat and pressure.

Following the “popping” process, the chips are then seasoned with all natural ingredients, as well as a touch of “non-hydrogenated, non-gmo sunflower, safflower and/or canola oil”.

They also contain NO;

  • fake colors
  • flavors
  • gmo’s
  • preservatives
  • cholesterol
  • saturated fat
  • trans fat
  • hydrogenated oils.
The end result is a light, crunchy, and satisfying snack that will keep your munchies calm, and your fingers out of that greasy potato chip bag.

Flavors include

  • Original
  • Sour cream and Onion
  • Barbeque
  • Sea Salt & Vinegar
  • Parmesan Cheese
  • Jalapeno
  • Cheddar
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Chili Lime
  • Sweet Potato

popchips are kosher, gluten free, vegetarian, and offer some vegan options as well, making them a great snack for any lifestyle.

Visit the popchips website for more information

Last week, popchips was very generous and sent me a few samples of their newest flavor, sweet potato.

Since I am a full blown sweet potato addict, I was super excited to try them out.

Verdict: Delicious!

They did not taste like a healthy product trying to taste like a fattening potato chip. These chips were crispy, subtly sweet, not overly salty, and tasted extremely fresh.

My niece also enjoyed the airy chip, and my brother and sister-n- law felt good about offering them to her as a snack.

Even my brother liked them, and he is hard to please when it comes to healthy snack alternatives.

My family is now “Pro popchip”, and here is a chance for you to get your hands on some as well!

Since tomorrow is Valentines Day and love is in the air, popchips has offered to send you and your “sweetheart”  a prize pack of popchips, which includes their new sweet potato flavor!
