When it comes to Oats, there are three main types with three main differences,

Taste, Texture, and Time.

Starting from the least processed…

  • Steel Cut Oats- whole raw oats cut into chunks with a nutty flavor and chewy texture. Take longer to cook (15-20 mins)
  • Old Fashioned Rolled Oats- whole oats rolled flat, steamed slightly for quicker cooking (3-5 mins). Bland in flavor.
  • Quick cooking oats-slightly ground up oats for quick cooking (2-3 mins) Bland in flavor.

If you’re like me, and prefer a chewier bowl of oats, you will love the steel cut version.

They are more dense that regular oats, and once cooked, have a similar texture to brown rice.

To cut down on cooking time, mix 1/4 cup oats with 3/4 cups water and heat for 2 minutes in the microwave before placing it in the fridge overnight.

In the morning, heat your oats and add your favorite topping such as fruit, nuts, honey and spices for an all-star breakfast that will keep you feeling full and satisfied.

Delivery!

Hi!

I finally have a second to sit down and blog!

Between work, teaching spin, planning a wedding, and living life in general, it has been hard to find time to write a post.

But that’s what Instagram is for right?..right?

The generous people over at Chobani sent me some new flavors to try, Banana 2%, Pear 0%, Chobani Bite Fig with Orange Zest, and Chobani Bite Coffee with Dark Chocolate Chips! I will do a recap on them very soon!

They also sent over a complimentary spoon, which I love!

My Sunwarrior protein also arrived, which was perfect since I was down to my last scoop!

IMG_2345

But of all the deliveries that I received the week, the best one by far was the birth of my brand new niece named Sofia, who arrived on 1/31/2113.

Chicken and Cabbage Vegetable Soup

I have a cough.

I can’t stop sneezing.

And the only cure for my sickness is currently cooking away in the crock pot.

wild arugula, chopped sweet potato, kumato tomatoes and shredded chicken

But if you’re not a fan of mustard, or do not have a Trader Joe’s in your area, I also have another dressing that’s every peanut lovers dream.

2 tbsp. Peanut Flour + 1/3 of Water: Mix to desired consistency, and drizzle over your salad, stir fry, or even your Sunday morning pancakes.

spinach, baby carrots, broccoli and egg white scramble, topped with peanut flour dressing and a sprinkle of cinnamon for a hint of sweetness.

This dressing resembles the peanut sauce that you find at Japanese restaurants, which Matt and I went to this weekend to tackle our Sushi craving head on.

Salmon Maki and Tekka (tuna) Maki with brown rice and extra ginger

Luckily, Matt doesn’t like ginger, so I got it all to myself Smile

Hi!

Yes, I’m still alive. I’ve just been busy working, living, and enjoying the colorful month of October.

IMG_1375

And then creating Fall foliage inspired dishes Smile

As previously mentioned, I have been adding more plant based protein into my diet, and so far it’s going really well.

nuts&seeds, nutritional yeast, beans, edamame, broccoli, kale, peanut flour, oats, quinoa, Sunwarrior protein powder…just to name a few lol

The next time you make prepare a meal, make sure to add some color to your plate.

Color=Nutrient variety= Boatload of benefits!

What colors are you eating today?

What I’m Loving Wednesday

I’ll get to that, but first, I want to start off with what I am NOT loving.

IMG_1356

Um…seriously!?

Knee’s do NOT go over your toes. Period!

If needed, put a chair behind you for support through the motion, or place a stability ball between you and the wall.

When I come across articles like this in fitness magazines, it infuriates me. Mostly because young women, who are in search of a healthy and accurate approach to exercise and eating, are the main audience.

And don’t even get me started on the 1,500 calorie a day diets that these magazines try to play off as healthy. They neglect the fact that everyone’s body is different and has different needs depending on an abundance of factors.

children’s size bowl of Special K with skim milk and one strawberry anyone?

Bottom line, exercise enhances your diet’s results, and your diet enhances your energy to workout. It’s a team effort.

Eat real food, eat real food often, workout smart, and drink plenty of water.

OK…Moving on Smile

My family and I threw my father a surprise 60th birthday dinner at The Capital Grille this past weekend, and one of our favorite appetizers to order on the menu is the Cold Shellfish Platter.

IMG_1349

one pound lobster, crab meat, jumbo shrimp, and fresh shucked oysters served over ice.

It’s basically a seafood lovers dream, and at $100 dollars per tower, you better believe this thing is worth the splurge.

Along with 3 towers dispersed throughout the table, we also had prosciutto wrapped mozzarella, choice of soup or salad, and any choice of entrée and sides.

I ordered the grilled swordfish, which is my favorite entrée on the menu.

IMG_0026

And for dessert, we has an assortment of hazelnut chocolate cake, coconut cream pie, crème boule, cheesecake, and my all time favorite…

IMG_0028

Flourless chocolate cake. It’s not even right how good this thing is.

I swear I’m loving other things besides The Capital Grille..such as the shirt that I wore there Smile

It’s every woman’s fashion trick Winking smile

Other loves include…

One of my favorite ways to use peanut flour is as a dip

By the way!

I added a link to my sidebar for anyone interested in purchasing Sunwarrior Protein. It’s the only protein powder that I use, and the link will take your directly to their Website for easy access.

Here’s some information about my #1 protein choice.

  • A great tasting plant-based protein with a silky smooth texture that blends easily without the chalky or grainy texture found in other vegetable based proteins.
  • A 98% correlation rate to Mother’s Milk and a 98.2% digestion efficiency, one of the highest digestibility and efficiency ratings of any other protein sources (compared to whey and soy).
  • Highest Net Protein Utilization score of any plant-based protein and the highest ratio of amino acids converted to proteins.
  • Uses neither chemicals nor acid hydrolysis. Uses organic enzymes and the process is 100% Organic Compliant.
  • Naturally rich in vitamins and minerals, contains high amounts of antioxidants, tocopherols, tocotrienols, and other essential nutrients such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, phosphorous, iron, and potassium.
  • Increases absorption and effectiveness of vitamins and minerals.
  • Easily digested by infants, the elderly, and adults. The World Health Organization may be using Sunwarrior Classic Protein in the future to feed malnourished individuals.
  • Clinical studies show the balanced nutritional profile of rice helps to maintain and control insulin levels.
  • Additional clinical studies show that Sunwarrior Classic Protein has cholesterol lowering potential and the USDA is currently using Sunwarrior Classic Protein in trials to see if it may help control high blood pressure.
