We’re Goin’ Fishin’!

While most New Englanders are preparing for the 18-24 inches of snow set to arrive this weekend, I am packing my bags and heading to NH for the Annual Ice Fishing Derby on Lake Winnipesaukee!…

Say what?

Yup. It’s that time of year again!

Our group has endured all types of weather on this lake; From sun to clouds, windy to calm, bearable to downright freezing.

However, this year may bring a whole new level of extremes that we have yet to battle.

We should have our own show on TLC to document how amusing this will be.

We have two forms of shelter, one with a wood burning stove and one with a heater, as well as a fire pit, stove for cooking, and of course, vodka, gin, beer, and wine.

You know…the essentials.

Luckily this was not the year to rent an RV and sleep out on the ice.

That year was FREEEZING! But as you can see, it was sunny and clear. No blizzard in sight.

Finally after our stay at The Inn at the Mills last year, we decided that there was no longer a need to brave through the cold, and a quaint hotel was just what we needed.

So while this blizzard barrels through with full force, we will spend our days outside catching fish (trying), and our nights drinking margaritas by the fire, swimming in our heated pool, and keeping warm in our cozy cottage on the lake.

Now that’s ice fishing in style.

What I Ate While Ice Fishing.

Here are more pictures from my Ice Fishing Trip, along with some of my eats!

OK, now onto the food!

The pasta felt SO good to eat in the frigid air. Just holding the warm plate was heavenly.

Our body uses a lot of energy to stay warm, making our appetite’s much more ravenous than normal. Thank goodness we had a whole pot to go around, we all had 2 servings each!

I swapped the eggplant for grilled chicken, and a kale salad in place of the pasta.

“Camp”: Located at the “Chase House”, one of the sister hotels next door to our Inn.

The décor was set up to resemble an intimate cabin with a fireplace, small bar and wooden furniture.

I ordered the Pan Seared Salmon atop a spinach salad with brown sugared pecans and a side of butternut squash.

All of this glorious candy was located right in Marketplace of our Inn.

Good weekend on the food front.

Along with plenty of walking, sliding and shivering, I was able to fit some fitness into my day. I did not use the hotel gym during my trip, however I sporadically performed push ups,bath tub tricep dips, squats,lunges, planks, and other bodyweight exercises throughout the weekend.

See, you can work out anywhere! You just have to be creative Smile

I definitely recommend staying at “The Mills Falls Inn” in Meredith, NH.

It was cozy, quaint, and right in the middle of everything.

Ice Fishing Weekend part 1

Brrrr!!!

I am still warming up from my weekend spent on Lake Winnipesaukee for the annual Ice Fishing Derby.

It was a blast, however due to the warmer weather we’ve had this year, the ice was thin in some areas and many people decided not to participate. Someone actually slipped through the ice Saturday night and had to be pulled out by the fire department.

Scary!

I’ll get into more details about my trip later, but for now, here are some photos of our beautiful hotel.

I hope next year brings back the usual fun crowds, however it was nice not having to deal with packed restaurants and busy roads.

Well, I have a ton of laundry to do and need to wash the smoke smell out of my hair from the fire pit. Smile

Cold as Ice {fishing}

I always considered my family to be “beach people”.

Although I snowboard, sled, and make igloos like a champion, I am not a fan of the cold weather, and my Winter-self has never been very adventurous.

That, however, changed dramatically once Matt came into my life.

Our first NYE ringing in 2007. (ignore the gangsta “peace” sign)

He had introduced me to a whole new world of Winter, and I quickly fell in love with what the season had to offer.

Take this weekend for instance.

Saturday…Mostly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of snow showers. Highs in the upper 20s. Light and variable winds…Becoming west around 10 mph in the afternoon.

Sunday…Partly cloudy. Lows around 10 above. Highs 15 to 20. Wind chill values as low as 5 below.

Yikes!

I normally don’t care too much about the weather forecast, however when you are spending your Saturday and Sunday on a frozen bed of ice, that can make things a bit more…frigid.

Why am I spending this weekend perched on ice like a polar bear, you ask? Because it’s the annual Ice Fishing Derby on Lake Winnipesaukee, and I am PUMPED!

I never thought I would enjoy saying such a thing

Think of it like this…

You are sitting on a beach all day surrounded by food and friends. However, instead of feeling the hot sun beating down on you while drinking fruity cocktails, you’re sitting around a fire on a frozen lake while drinking spiked hot coffee Smile

OK, so it’s not day at the beach, but it’s still fun nonetheless!

Plus, we have a mini stove that we use to make things like egg&cheese burritos, oatmeal, crisp bacon, and steaming pasta fagioli. All foods that stick to your gut and keep you warm and fuzzy inside Smile

It’s a weekend full of foot/hand warmers, fire pits, alcohol and hanging with the best people ever.

Our “porch”, fully equipped with a fridge, chic rug, antique chairs, and most importantly..a heater

Cool, huh?

There are restaurants set up on the lake such as Chili’s and The Antler, as well as sausage carts, soup stations and coffee shops.

There’s even a pizza delivery service that drives onto the ice to bring you your pie.

You can also take a helicopter ride over the lake, or scuba dive with the fish deep beneath the ice.

Crazy!!

Since this weekend attracts a large crowd of people and hotel rooms book up fast, you have to make reservations about a year in advance.

Our hotel is right on the lake and includes a hot tub, spa, large fireplace and a cozy bar that I can escape to if the cold weather starts to win the battle.

I’ve downloaded Sarah Jio’s second novel “The Bungalow” and I’m excited to start. I loved “The Violets of March”, and I am looking forward to reading it by the fire… on or off of the ice
