Be Stronger Than Your Excuses

I will not mention the weather because I don’t want to jinx it, so lets move on….

……………………………………………………………………………………..

The hardest part about starting a workout program is finding the motivation to do so. We all have excuses as to why exercise and eating well is not a part of our weekly routine, but the truth is, no excuse is good enough when it comes to taking care of our body.

If you have to wake up an hour early, do it. If you have to come home an hour late, do it. If you have to cook a bunch of chicken and chop up vegetables for the week on Sunday, DO IT!

See the pattern here?

104427285079333504_eBifZjtJ_b[1]

Stop allowing your mind to tell you that you can’t, because eventually, if you keep neglecting your health, you really will not be able to.

As soon as you begin to head down the path towards a balanced life, everything will suddenly feel lighter, both mentally and physically.

Start now. If not now, when?

Here are some tips that I recommend to clients who are struggling with finding a healthy balance.

Figure out what works for you and stick to it.

41517627784693565_VViq2KEC_b[1]

Put yourself first. Everything else can wait an hour until you are finished.

Make your breakfast the night before so that it is ready in the fridge for the following day. Oatmeal, eggs, green protein smoothies, or fruit with nuts and yogurt are all great “grab and go” meals.

Use your Sunday as prep. Make a batch of proteins such as chicken, lean ground turkey, beans, or hard boiled eggs. Chop all of your vegetables and set them in Tupperware containers, along with a carb such as brown rice, sweet potatoes, or quinoa. All you have to do is pick what you want, pack it up, and go.

  • Make sure to also add a healthy fat to each meal, such as almonds, flaxseeds, coconut oil, avocado, or hummus.

Craving sweets? Grab a piece of fruit with a small handful of mixed nuts, make a cup of sweet tea, or drink a glass of water.

  • Try and figure out why your sweet tooth is acting up, and fix the problem right then. Ask yourself: Did I eat enough at lunch? Drink enough water? Have a healthy fat with my meal? If so, and your body really just wants a taste of the good stuff, snack on a small piece of dark chocolate.

Acknowledge that you are eating it, savor it, and move on.

Spice up your life. You do not need to add cream sauces, butter, or high sodium marinades to your food. Herbs and spices, lemon juice, and fresh tomato sauce can add an abundance of flavor to any dish.

Check the Online menu. Before you head out to dinner, look over the online menu so that you have time to figure out what you want to eat. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for a vegetable medley or salad in place of pasta, or to change the way your meal is prepared. Most restaurants are more than happy to accommodate you.

Your water bottle is your best friend. Always have it by your side.

  • Try adding lemon, cucumber, or orange slices for a refreshing boost of flavor, along with a cup of decaf tea throughout the day.

Always have a challenge in mind, and make it your mission to achieve it.

  • “I will run 1 extra minute today”. “I will try Yoga this weekend”. “I will perform a push up” “I will walk into the weight section with confidence, and bang out some bicep curls like the best of ‘em!”.

Pack your gym clothes for the next day in a bag by the front door, or lay them out so you can quickly get dressed and start your morning off right. Or…sleep in them!

Don’t think of exercise as a chore. It should be something that you enjoy because it makes you look and feel good. Figure out what type of exercise interests you, and use that as your starting point.

  • Incorporate cardio, strength training, and stretching into your routine, and if you are unsure about how to perform a certain movement, or how to work a piece of equipment, be sure to ask a trainer at your gym, or the class instructor. It is their JOB to help you.

If it feels too easy, it probably is.

  • If you don’t feel like you’re working out, then bump up the intensity. Don’t be afraid to sweat, or feel the burn when lifting weights. Those moments of discomfort are what change and challenge our body.

Realize that everyone is here for the same reason. The gym can be an intimidating place at first, but it’s important to realize that nobody is any better than another when it comes to exercise. Our goals may vary, but the fact that we are taking care of ourselves is what we all have in common.

All you need is yourself, and a little room. If you do not have a gym membership, use your living room as your workout area and your body as resistance. Push ups, squats, jumping jacks and mountain climbers are all challenging movements that target a large group of muscles and speed up the metabolism.

Remember why you are doing this. Whether it is for weight loss, muscle tone, lowering cholesterol, or stress management, remember why you are taking the time to workout and eat well. As the weeks pass, you will no longer need the reminder. It will become a part of your life that will continue to benefit you in more ways than one.

A healthy body is a happy body. Take care of yourself because no one else will. You are your own worst enemy, and best friend all in one. Become one with yourself, listen to your body, and begin to feel amazing.

Seafood Festival 2012

Matt and I are back earlier then expected, but we had an awesome time at Hampton Beach’s Annual Seafood Festival.

IMG_1269

And it. was. packed!

On our drive up to New Hampshire, knowing that I may not find any stomach friendly foods, I made sure to have a protein rich snack to hold me over for a while.

IMG_1262

And it’s a that good thing that I did.

Of course I expected the usual fried clams, lobster rolls and seafood chowder, but it being a festival celebrating Seafood, I thought I would see more fish options such as salmon, haddock, and scallop plates.

All of the stands pretty much had the same fried foods available, but I still searched long and hard for something I could eat that wouldn’t cause me to hobble back to the beach house with cramps and indigestion.

Enter Sesame encrusted Ahi Tuna skewers

IMG_1270

And Grilled Shrimp and Swordfish

IMG_1272

I also split a shrimp cocktail and corn on the cobb with Matt, while he enjoyed his fried clam strips and baked lobster mac and cheese

IMG_1273

It was the perfect amount of picky foods before heading down to the beach for live music and drinks

IMG_1271IMG_1274

The band reggae band, Hot Like Fire, brought one last taste of Summer as the cool Autumn breeze filled the beach front tent.

Everyone was having a great time dancing, drinking, and singing along to the familiar songs that the band performed.

As the evening rolled in, so did the down pouring rain clouds. This cancelled our plans of walking to the Sea Ketch for dinner, and instead, we took a drive to North Hampton to a lively Italian Restaurant, Ron Jillian’s.

IMG_1275

We ordered one the best antipasto plates that I’ve ever had, followed by Herb encrusted Cod with a side of steamed broccoli, which I swapped in place of lobster cream risotto,

IMG_1276IMG_1277

Matt also ordered Pasta Bolognese, a favorite of his whenever we eat out at an Italian restaurant.

It was a perfect “rained out dinner”, and we spent the rest of the night back at the beach house watching TV in our adorable loft bedroom

It feels like Fall today, and now it’s time for the Pat’s game and Sunday dinner at my parents.

Enjoy the rest of your day! xoxo

Along with 1/2 sliced Fuji apple, this combination gave me an awesome energy boost that lasted through a class of crazy intervals, isolated climbs, and full out downhill sprints.

I can confidently say that I rocked this class from start to finish, which is one of the best feelings in the world.

IMG_1105

I’m burning a new fall scent as we speak Smile

A luscious combination of juicy pears, plums, and grapes with parts of spice and cardamom.

You know how overly excited I get when it’s time to burn “The Fall Collection”, and this year’s scents did not disappoint.

spiced cinnamon and pumpkin, baked apples, fresh leaves and sweet desserts.

How excited are you all!?

Pinned Image

I must say that the “Whoopie Pie” scent was not my favorite, nor was the atrociously strong “Witches’ Brew”, which literally made me try to jump away from my own nose.

Maybe it smells better while it’s burning. I hope.

I think I’ll stick to “Candy Corn” instead Smile

OK enough talk about Halloween, it’s August 8th!

Back to Summer heat…

I’ve been adding Sriracha to my eggs, salads ..pretty much anything that I can

IMG_1069

Just a teaspoon of this spicy sauce adds the perfect kick to any meal, so if you’re a fan of spicy foods, pick up a bottle now!

They are on sale 2 for $5 at Stop and Shop

I also picked up another carton of coconut love for my Protein Oats and Shakes.

Spinning and Beach Snacks

The sun is rising later and later, which makes it harder and harder to wake up at 5am.

IMG_1070

Hello moon

I met a friend/client for an early morning Spin class at her gym, and we were both drenched in sweat, but feeling strong by the end.

IMG_1071

I’ve always said that music is the key to a good workout, and this particular instructor was right on with her music choices.

There is nothing worse than trying to push through a spin class while being forced to listen to old school aerobics songs such as “Hit me with you best shot” and “Come on ride the train”

Pinned Image

I’ve even experienced an entire spin session full of Johnny Cash, The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles cover bands.

Talk about wanting to ride my bike right through the second story window.

This morning however.. great class, great music, great sweat.

IMG_1073

(P.S I’m obsessed with my Polar HRM)

We followed up with a quick upper body circuit that looked like this.

IMG_1072

  • Push Ups-15
  • Shoulder Press-12
  • Upright Row-12

Rest 30 seconds, and repeat for a total of 3 sets.

  • Bicep Curls-15
  • Overhead Triceps Extension–15

Rest for 30 seconds and repeat for a total of 3 sets

Stretch.

I knew exactly what I wanted as my post workout meal, so I immediately whipped up my yogurt bowl as soon as I walked in the door.

IMG_1074

Greek yogurt, blueberries, 1/2 sliced frozen banana, 1/2 cup Kashi GOLEAN, 1/2 Tbsp raw almond butter, and cinnamon.

craving demolished.

My family and I are heading to York Beach Maine for the weekend, so I need to get my procrastinating self packed.

Along with a few outfits and toiletries, I make it a point to pack some snacks for the beach, and to munch on before dinner.

Vacation Snacks 101

  • 100 calorie almond packs/Nut butter packets (such as Justin’s)
  • Easy fruits-apples,oranges,plums,peaches,grapes,strawberries
  • Greek Yogurt
  • Hard Boiled Eggs
  • String Cheese
  • Ziploc bags of raw veggies
  • Tuna packets/Boards Head Low Salt Turkey deli meat
  • Rice Cakes
  • Protein Powder/Bars
  • Popchips
  • Pickles
  • WATER..and wine Smile

It’s always better to have your own options, other than what’s available on the boardwalk or brought by others.

Turn down the Lays, soda, and pizza, and opt for a bag of popchips with your sandwich along side a crunchy pickle. Munch on sliced turkey rolled with cheese and a handful of almonds, rice cakes with a packet of nut butter, or a hard boiled egg with a piece of fruit.

Simple on the go snacks that provide energy, nutrients, and salty craving control. Along with bottled water, you’ll be set for the day!

Enjoy your first weekend of August!
