Red Solo Cup

Last night, as Matt and I were watching scary movies, I informed him of my genius plan that will take place every Halloween once we buy a house.

On our front lawn, we will set up two tables:

  • one table for kids, filled with a variety of candy
  • one table for adults, filled with a variety of mild Fall themed drinks.

32369691041259497_6QiAjaaG_c[1]

Think hot coffee with Baileys, spiked apple cider, hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps and cups of Pumpkin Ale

Kids get their candy fix, adults catch a break on their long walks through the neighbored, and everyone wins!

Genius.

Maybe next year Smile

To keep my own hand out of the candy bowl, I made myself a cup of hot chocolate, minus the Baileys, and topped it with a dollop of fat free cool whip and dark chocolate chips

10 oz hot water, 1 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder, and 1 packet Stevia in the Raw

And look what’s about to make it’s much anticipated, grand debut….

The Red cups are back! Bumping my favorite iced cup of red into Spring 2013

Till next year, Iced unsweetened passion tea.

Let’s make November a month to remember!

Longing for Oolong

Dr. Oz has raved about the benefits of Oolong Tea many times on his show, so when I came across it this weekend while browsing the aisles in Marshall’s, I threw it in my cart without hesitation.

This is why I love Marshall’s… So many hidden gems.

Oolong Tea
“It’s not black tea or green tea, but the combo of the two that gives this tea its metabolic benefits. You get the power of the caffeine and antioxidants, which have been shown to increase post-drinking caloric burn by about 5% for an hour. Equally exciting is that oolong actually inhibits the absorption of some fat consumed at meals (it’s not a “fat blocker” though so you don’t have to worry about healthy nutrients like fat-soluble vitamins not making it into your system). Less fat absorbed and less triglycerides made means a healthier waistline and healthier cholesterol levels”- doctoroz.com

IMG_1028

“Oolong tea is a product made from the leaves, buds, and stems of the Camellia sinensis plant. It is partially fermented, where black tea is fully fermented, and green tea is unfermented.
Oolong tea is used to sharpen thinking skills, improve mental alertness, and is also used to prevent
cancer, tooth decay, osteoporosis, and heart disease.
Some people use oolong tea to treat
obesity, diabetes, “hardening of the arteries” (atherosclerosis), high cholesterol and skin allergies such as eczema; and to boost the immune system.” – WebMD

I swapped my usual black coffee this morning for cup of Oolong, and I couldn’t help but notice the feeling of natural alertness that it left me with. Minus the jitters.

IMG_1030

Mixed with a packet of Stevia in the Raw, it was slightly sweet, wonderfully soothing, and tamed my appetite to a cat’s meow versus an angry lion’s roar.

My stomach can be very demanding when it’s hungry.

By the time lunch rolled around, I was ready to eat.

This tea is a keeper, and I will definitely be adding a cup a day to my routine. Thank you Marshall’s :)

So..How are YOU tackling the start of your week?

Let me know!

Beach. Wine. Food. Fireworks

There is nothing like a sunny Sunday morning at the beach.

IMG_0864

I love this room, but whenever I don’t sleep in my own bed, I always wake up feeling tight and in need a good stretch.

I completed a couple sets of push ups, squats, arm circles and abs to warm up my muscles before stretching, and after about 20 minutes, I felt so much better.

Last week, I made sure to get ahead in my Insanity workouts by skipping the Fit Test and a jumping right into the next days workout. That allowed me to have two days rest while we’re away, and I could focus on light cardio and body weight exercises when I found the time.

Planning ahead pays off :)

We had a great day yesterday, and weather wise, we only suffered  through a 1/2 hour shower around 6pm. Much less than what they got at home, but still a crazy sight to see.

IMG_0856

Other than that, it was a perfectly sunny day, and a clear, comfortable evening

IMG_0852

There was a HUGE kite collage on the beach, which made for a colorful backdrop overlooking to ocean.

IMG_0851

We took several walks up and down the strip, snacking on Purple Cow frozen yogurt, my favorite, and Matt had his usual chocolate in a cone with jimmies.

Around 4:30, we started to get hungry, so we stopped by our favorite lunch spot South Beach Seafood. They have some of the best clam strips I’ve every had; very fresh, and not overly fried.

Their salads are really good too.

IMG_0854

Whatever they use to season the chicken with is delicious.

If you are ever in the Hampton Beach area, try out this small beachside eatery. It’s one of the best on the strip for a quick lunch or snack.

We headed back to the house for our own “Happy Hour” before storm, and to get ready  for a night out on the town.

IMG_0855IMG_0857

Live band in the half shell.

Then it was off to the Sea Ketch for dinner; A 3 floor restaurant with delicious food, live music and two bars with a great view

.IMG_0863

It’s another must try if you’re in the area.

IMG_0859

Seafood stuffed mushrooms

IMG_0861

Caribbean jerk chicken with tropical fruit salsa and mixed veggies

IMG_0860

And complimentary fireworks which take place every weekend at 9:30pm.

Beach. Wine. Food and Fireworks.

A winning combination.

It’s our last day here before heading home to Sunday dinner at my parents, so until then, you can find me in my beach chair doing absolutely nothing Smile.

Have a great Sunday! xoxo

Satur-Date {The Painted Burro}

Today is my day off from Insanity, so I decided to go for a light walk around the lake before heading over to my parents for a Father’s Day barbecue.

304

My dad and my beautiful niece eating ice cream in Aruba.

My dad has definitely played a role in my passion for health and fitness. He has always been into working out and eating healthy, and as you can see, it’s paid off!

Just goes to show that exercising and eating right will have it’s perks as we age.

Keep your body strong, fueled and stretched so it can carry you through life with ease.

There are no excuses.

Last night, Matt and I, along with some friends, headed to a Mexican restaurant/Tequila bar called The Painted Burro, in Davis Square.

IMG_0812

I like to dress the part, so I wore the most festive shirt I could find Smile

The Painted Burro is not your typical Americanized Mexican restaurant, so don’t expect an “On the Border”  experience.

The eclectic dinner and drink menu is written in Mexican, and the atmosphere loud, hip and unique.

IMG_0814

We had to ask the waitress to explain a few of the dishes, and she was very helpful and knowledgeable about how each meal was created.

To start, we ordered some drinks and nibbled on a bucket of perfectly baked corn chips with tangy, thick salsa.

IMG_0813IMG_0815

Vodka, Soda Water, Lime Juice and Lemon

IMG_0818

FROZEN BURRO COLADA: Goslings Black Rum, cayenne pineapple juice, cream of coconut

For appetizers, we ordered the “Pork Chicharron”, which is small pork wedges in a spicy-sweet tamarind glaze, along with the “Fundido” cheese dip and soft corn tortillas.

IMG_0816

Amaaaazing! The combination of melty cheese, warm tortillas, and sweet pork tidbits made for the an intense burst of flavor and texture.

Not the most healthy, but delicious none the less Smile

I also ordered the Romaine Salad, basically because of the dressing alone.

IMG_0817

The smooth, creamy avocado was divine, and the spicy pepitas were the perfect addition the cool greens. It also came with anchovy’s, which I did not eat, and a tomatillo and agave vinaigrette.

As for our entrée’s, my dish won “Most Boring” at the table.

IMG_0821

Spicy tomato Grilled Mahi Mahi with a string bean and jicama salad.

I must admit that I wouldn’t order it again. The “Veracruzana” sauce was a bit overpowering, and I found that it amplified the usual subtle taste of the white fish.

Matt ordered the DUCK LEG CAZUELA, which was out of this world. My fork spent more time in his dish than in my own.

IMG_0819
Long Island duck, braised root vegetable & chile tamale, olives,
spring garlic, and oregano

It resembled a beef stew consistency, and all of the flavors complimented each other nicely.

The most unique entree at our table was the Yucatan Meatloaf, which is a ridiculous combination of spicy ground sirloin, chorizo, ham, chicharron, green olives and toasted almonds, topped with two fried eggs and guava ketchup.

IMG_0820

So many ingredients that somehow worked to create this flavorful, mouth-watering dish.

From the décor, to the food, to the authentic and strong drinks, I’d recommend The Painted Burro to anyone looking for a fun night out with a spicy splash of Mexican flare. The fresh ingredients and love put into each and every dish, truly introduce eaters to the taste of a culture so full of life.

Well, I’m off! Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!

Screaming Shoulders and Thirsty Thursday

My shoulders hurt.

After running the lake this afternoon, I headed over to the gym for a quick Back, Chest, and Shoulder workout that left my muscles shaking and completely burnt out.

Win!

Back

  • Lat Pull Down: 3 sets of 12, 45 pounds
  • Bent Over Row: 3 sets of 12, 15 pounds
  • Back Extension: 3 sets of 15, bodyweight

Chest

  • Push ups: 3 sets of 20
  • Dumbbell Chest Fly: 3 sets of 12, 15 pounds

Shoulders

I held a dumbbell in the opposite hand with my arm almost parallel to the floor as I worked the opposing side for the first 4 sets

.

  • Dumbbell Shoulder Press- 3x through, 10 pounds
  1. Horizontal Grip, Right side- 6 reps
  2. Horizontal Grip, Left side- 6 reps
  3. Vertical Grip, Right side- 6 reps
  4. Vertical Grip, Left side- 6 reps
  5. Arnold Press, both sides-  10 reps

Complete each movement in a slow and controlled motion. Breath out as you contract and in as you release. Keep your form in check!

  • Front Raise: 3 sets of 12, 7.5 pounds
  • Lateral Raise: 3 sets of 12, 7.5 pounds

Screaming shoulders…I think so.

I came home and made myself a green protein smoothie with my new Ninja blender, which literally kicks ass.

IMG_0719

In the mix

  • 1 scoop chocolate Sunwarrior protein powder
  • 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 2 large handfuls of spinach
  • 2 Tbsp rolled oats
  • water and ice.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve done a “Thirsty Thursday” post, but since this weekend marks the start of summer, what better time to get festive!

Whether you are attending a BBQ or throwing your own, don’t be shy to prepare some lower calories drinks that tastes just as good, have less sugar and still do the trick Smile

Here are some simple Memorial Day themed ideas.

You know I love my Vodka so I am being a bit biased, but Bacardi and Tequila would also work well.

  • 1.5 oz Vodka
  • 4 oz Sprite Zero
  • 2 frozen strawberries, halved
  • 5 frozen blueberries

  • 1.5 oz Vodka
  • 4 oz Diet Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash
  • 5 Frozen Blackberries

  • 1.5 oz Raspberry Vodka
  • 4 oz Sprite Zero
  • 5 Frozen Raspberries

  • 1.5 oz Blueberry Vodka
  • 4 oz Fresca
  • 5 Frozen blueberries

You can also puree some fruit with your choice of alcohol, pouring it into an ice cube tray to make these mini popsicles, which would be a hit!

Pinned Image

Add fresh lemon juice with water in place of soda, use Agave nectar or Stevia for added sweetness, and even freeze some red and blue berries into ice cubes for a festive flare in your water glass.

Refreshing drinks without added calories from syrups and sour mix is the perfect option for your guests, and for yourself. Show everyone that there is always a way to make things healthier, without losing flavor.

Eat the Rainbow

Peas and Crayons

The time has finally come.

I am officially beginning to like the taste of SunButter.

IMG_0630

Not that it’s a big deal if I didn’t like it, I just hate to waste food. I would have found a way to finish the jar, or snuck some into Matt’s sandwiches to see if he noticed Smile

Breakfast this morning

IMG_0656

Banana egg white oats, topped with blueberries and a mixture of raw almond butter and sunbutter.

I like to try all different types of food, and it’s good to have a variety of nutrients in our diet.

Since the summer is creeping up at a rapid pace, delicious fruits such as cherries, berries, kiwis and melons will begin to stock the shelves at grocery stores and Farmer’s Market’s.

fruit bowlIMG_0357IMG_0647

All fruits and vegetables taste better when they are in season, and I like to incorporate all of them into my daily dishes.

Pinned Image

I’m loving pineapple lately, and have been adding some to my yogurt and smoothies for a juicy hint of tang. Eating it frozen is delicious as well, and makes for a great night time snack mixed with some dark chocolate or cottage cheese.

IMG_0654

I like to have variety when it comes to my beverages as well. I can only drink so much water.

Tea, Coffee, Naturally sweetened lemonade, ACV cocktails.

IMG_0648IMG_0649IMG_0650

you can also make your own lemonade by combining water, fresh lemon juice, and a packet of all natural sweetener such as Truvia or Stevia

IMG_0621

Here’s a fun chart describing what Tea works best for you depending on your mood.

Pinned Image

I also get plenty of vegetables in different forms throughout my week.

IMG_0561IMG_0655

eggwhite omelet with kale, steamed broccoli and carrots, 1/2 cold sweet potato topped with melted coconut oil, which forms a hard shell of tropical bliss.

IMG_0646

Mother’s Day Kabobs, a favorite of mine in the summer months

I always grab the skewer with the most charred vegetables on it Smile

Once we find what we like, it’s easy to eat the same foods over and over again. However, it’s important to give your body an abundance of nutrients from different sources to stay strong, energetic and glowing.

Start introducing a healthy variety of fruits, vegetables, proteins and fats into your diet to find what makes YOUR body happy.

Color is beautiful, Eat the Rainbow.

Satur-Date {Legal Seafoods}

I’ll make this post short and sweet because it’s too beautiful out to be sitting inside on the computer.

And I’d rather be sitting on the back of Matt’s Harley with the wind blowing in my face Smile

IMG_0539

Last night, Matt and I spent our “Satur-Date” at Legal Seafoods in Boston’s Long Wharf, and the weather was perfect for a stroll through the city.

Per usual, we headed straight to the bar and ordered a Citron Vodka Soda and a Bud Light bottle.

IMG_0540IMG_0541

After chatting with the Bartender and some other eaters, we both knew exactly what we wanted to order for our appetizer.

The Legal Experience

IMG_0542

Blackened raw tuna sashimi with seaweed and ginger, Jumbo shrimp cocktail, Crab cakes, and Steamed seafood wontons.

Though this dish was almost $30, it was definitely money well spent.

Along with another round of drinks, we each ordered the Grilled Cajun salmon from the “make your own entrée” menu. As sides, I opted for brown rice and green beans, while Matt chose a baked potato and jalapeno cheddar polenta, which tasted just like Queso dip.

Delicious!

IMG_0543

But the best part of the entire meal was dessert.

If you are a chocoholic like me, you would fall off your chair after one bite of this rich and decadent “Warm Chocolate Pudding Cake”, served with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and a subtle coconut cookie.

IMG_0544

The combination of warm chocolate, cool and creamy ice cream, and a crumbly coconut cookie was out of this world.

Matt and I didn’t speak the entire time we shared this heavenly dessert. We even considered ordering another, but then realized that our tropical vacation is less than a week away, so it was best to stop after one plate.

BUT PLEASE ORDER THIS THE NEXT TIME YOU GO!

There is nothing wrong with bonding over a delicious a dessert every once in awhile :)

While Matt was at work this morning, I tackled this workout and followed it up with an ice cold green smoothie.

  • 1 scoop chocolate Sunwarrior
  • 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 6 frozen strawberries,
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup frozen spinach
  • water and ice

Tastes so good on a warm day Smile

Now get outside and enjoy yourselves! xoxo
